The Advantages of Skype For Studying

Skype is software that turns a personal computer into a telephone, using voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) technology. This converts voice signals into data streams that are sent over the Internet and converted back to audio by the recipient's computer. Millions use Skype to make free video and voice calls, send instant messages, and share files with other Skype users, especially individuals and businesses. Every day, people also use Skype to make low-cost calls to landlines and mobiles.

P2P model

Although Skype is not the only company that offers VoIP services for consumers, it functions on a P2P model rather than as a centralized application. With the P2P model, users download a piece of software that allows computers to communicate directly with one another, without having to be routed through a central location. This model allows Skype to function as a robust and distributed medium for communication and hence learning too. The service allows communication between devices that are already equipped with Skype, which is free, or between a Skype device and a telephone for relatively low fees.

Inexpensive Communication

Skype provides an easy way to communicate with people around the world at no cost, opening the door to a wide range of activities that can improve student engagement and comprehension. Learning becomes more authentic as it goes beyond the walls of a classroom, and being able to have a phone call or a video chat with someone on the other side of the world can make learning come alive. Video calling on Skype is simple to set up and offers the ability to see friends and colleagues and have a visual interaction with them. To include multiple Skype contacts in the same call, simply click the conference button in the Skype window and add the desired parties. Skype can conference up to 5 people in a call on any computer. With Video conferencing studying and learning naturally become much faster and easier.

Using Skype

Using Skype is simple. It just requires a small initial investment in a set of headphones and a webcam that is compatible with your computer. Once these are ready, create a Skype Account and visit Skype.com, and click "Download Skype Now." Once the program is downloaded, choose a username and create your profile. Add to your contacts list, the friend you'd like to study with. Type his/ her Skype username into the search box, and invite him/ her to connect with you. Click on your study partner's username in your contact list once you add him/ her and its study time for both!
