How to Turn Your iPod Touch Into an iPhone

iPod touch effectively can be used as a iPhone without the binding contract from AT&T. As an elegant mp3 player it now iPod touch has the capability to perform all tasks that you can do with your iPhone. If you think with little abstractions the only difference between an iPod touch and an iPhone is that the latter can make phone calls. Otherwise, most of the stuff such as games or apps or functionalities are available for both of these apple gadgets. If we bridge the gap wouldn't you say you have an iPhone or that you have an equivalent of that? There is a vast number of applications, mostly free, that you can use on your iPod and turn it into an iPhone. Please read on for a review of few of these applications.

Truphone has an application that turns your iPod touch into an iPhone. You might wonder that iPod doesn't have a mic to talk. Yes, you will need a way to use a microphone on your iPod touch to use it as an iPhone. Truphone and many others (eBay is your friend) has developed such a device (headset with mic) and available for sale at just $7.49 plus postage for non-UK and non-Eu customers, or for £4.99 plus postage otherwise. This application lets you make FREE Phone calls to other Truphone users and many others including Skype, Google Talk etc. This app can be used over Wi-Fi and even 3G or other Data Plan, wherever you are in the world!

Skype has, since a long time, launched its application for iPhone as well for iPod touch. This application will let you make free phone calls to your skype contacts after you log in. This application, right now, is free to use but after 2010 there will be a small fee to use it - which kind of sucks. You can use your internet connection over wi-fi or over 3G, like truphone, to make calls - God bless AT&T. You can also call your contacts not on skype by dialing their phone number using dialpad, you might have to buy some skype credit or get a subscription though - unlimited calls to US and Canada is just $2.99/month.

Fring is a cool application with some really nice features such as Video calls to name one. Fring recently offered video calls using your phone over skype. This was even before iPhone 4 with facetime was released. However, in the very infamous recent fight between skype and Fring they no longer offer skype on their mobile client. However, you can still use fring to make free phone calls to your contacts over Gtalk, IMs etc. Also, you can configure your SIP settings in fring to use it as your sip phone. Most of the VoIP service provider that we reviewed can be configured using fring.

Whistle Phone is another option to make FREE Phone calls anywhere in USA. You also get a free phone number to receive incoming calls over your network. The only catch with whistle phone is that you need to listen to a 15 seconds ad before you can make an outgoing calls, remember RingPlus? But as per our experience it was not bad at all. That was a small list of applications that are easy to start with. There are some more applications that can be tweaked to work as a SIP client on your iPod touch. However, above applications take care of all your needs for a Free Phone Call, IM etc.
