How I Saved $1200 a Year With Skype

Late 2008 to the early part of 2009 I spent 6 months in Baghdad, Iraq. What made time fly was the ability to communicate with my family and friends via Skype. I signed up for Skype's Unlimited U.S and Canada plan and got a local number U.S number that allowed people to call me and leave messages. The commercial internet in Iraq is not even close to what we have in the United States, but Skype worked very well. That got me to thinking why am I paying AT&T $100 dollars a month at home when I could have Skype for about $60-70 dollars per year?So when I returned from Iraq I put my thoughts into action. I didn't want to be tied to a headset like I was in Iraq so I started to look for a Skype phone. The first one I bought was the Belkin Wifi Phone, but after getting it setup the...

The same protocols or rules that are used for sending data over the internet is used for sending voice transmissions. Data is usually sent over the web in packets. With VOIP, these packets also include the both the sender's and the receivers MAC or Media Access Control address, along with the voice signal.Advantages of VOIPThere are many advantages of using VOIP over traditional POTS or Plain Old Telephone Systems. Future Communications With Professional Voicemail and Call Recording

There's about as much similarity between a modern business phone system, with its professional voicemail and call recording (among other things), and the old "plug and play" receptionist at the desk, as there is between a rocket ship and a Morris Minor. Modern communications, of course, are faster, more streamlined, and one heck of a lot more complicated than they used to be - which is why they tend to be routed through computer software and Internet hosting addresses, rather than the traditional in-office exchange. That said, the online version of a business phone system, which delivers professional voicemail and call recording as just two of its many functions, is an in-office exchange: just an extraordinarily sophisticated one.So: what actually is pro voice mail? Simple. It's...

Mobile VoIP for Business Is More Than Just a Cost Saver

In stark contrast to the difficulties emerging for mobile VoIP for consumers (the encroachment of the telecom giants on what should be a 'nearly free service', and the imposition of calling plans that almost negate the advantages of VoIP), business mobile VoIP is a breath of fresh air for large companies with dozens of on the go employees. The difference between the average consumer considering adding VoIP to their mobile phone and the average business owner considering it as a feature added to an already existing VoIP / PBX network is that while the consumer's actions are primarily driven by a desire to save money, the business owner is more driven by the need to increase productivity and employee satisfaction.Reduced costs may indeed play a part (particularly if the company...

VoIP and Fax - An Introduction

Traditional fax machines have always posed a bit of a problem for VoIP networks. This is because VoIP technology encodes analog sound in a specific manner for transmission. Asterisk VoIP and Their Cost Saving Benefits

Asterisk telephone systems (PBXs) use voice over IP (voip) and ISDN for making telephone calls. The most common method is using Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) which is the international standard for inter-vendor phone system communication. Asterisk voip telephone calls are typically transported over the internet to reduce cost using a SIP trunk. SIP trunks offer significant cost-savings for businesses, eliminating the need for local PSTN gateways, costly ISDN BRIs (Basic Rate Interfaces) or PRIs (Primary Rate Interfaces). The SIP trunk has multiple voice channels within it rather like a traditional ISDN service although the number of channels within a trunk can be much higher than an ISDN service and much cheaper. SIP trunks use voip to carry the voice streams over the internet,...

VoIP Solutions For the Home and Small Office
