VoIP, or voice over IP, is the process and technology of transmitting voice communications or multimedia over Internet protocol (IP) networks. Basically it is making a telephone call over the Internet, and such services require the use of VoIP phones. This is unlike the good old telephone lines still in wide use today.

VoIP phones use the 'voice over Internet protocol' technologies instead of the ordinary PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) or POTS (Plain Old Telephone Services). It also has a call forward feature, where an incoming call is forwarded to another phone if the number is busy. The call waiting and call flashing is also supported, where a caller will know if the called party is busy. Some IP phones can also support a 3-way (or more) conference call, which is perfect for doing business. Lastly, these phones have a call history feature; where they keep track of incoming and outgoing caller IDs.

VoIP phones have made it possible, unlike the costly long-distance phone calls, to make calls anywhere on the globe at a very low cost (or sometimes free). Though this technology is still gaining fame, there is no doubt that in the near future its going to replace the plain old telephone.
